What is your job at CampusLIVE?

Utility infielder, who also plays the outfield when the outfielder goes down with an ankle sprain. I like to pitch, too. And batting is pretty sweet. And the coach has a pretty cool job, too. But the GM clearly dominates. I'm responsible for working with our executive team to build the best team in the USA (and maybe China, too). I also set up and run a lot of the business systems behind the business: Finances, Accounting, HR, Legal, Insurances, etc. I record and set projections for our KPI's and make sure we are going in the right direction with the company, for our users, customers, and most of all for our employees.

What brought you to CampusLIVE?

The desire to build something valuable every single day. Great people and the ability to be in control of my own successes and failures.

Do you have any favorite stories from your work life?

I could tell stories all day long about hilarious things I've seen at CampusLIVE. But here are a few of my favorites: epic Christmas parties, hearing our users tell us hilarious shit, receiving a rap song from one of our users on CampusLIVE, sleeping in a tent at UConn on a beach with a bunch of hippies watching Mark sing and play guitar and seeing everyone get drunk and fall asleep, dancing at Royale, candy throwing on birthdays, everyone being homeless for months at a time and sleeping in the office together, going to the State House, hearing the sales team closed McDonald's, Dunkin Donuts, Budweiser, Ernst & Young, and Microsoft, throwing awesome events at UMass that were totally sloppy, playing basketball with the guys after work, beating Ash 10-0 in fooseball only to lose 14 straight games to him after, Loose Goose Cafe, Pizza Rolls, and seeing every single person from the company smile every day.

What does the typical day look like for you?

I typically set about three to five sticky notes in front of me each day which are my big projects for the day I'd like to get accomplished. Everything else comes in the form of email throughout the day. Because of my role, I'm typically pulled in ten different directions. And you know what? I love it and I wouldn't have it any other way. I pride myself on my ability to solve problems, even if I've never solved them before. That's where I get my kicks. So whether or not it's helping out one of the teams within the business, motivating the team, diving into our financial model, paying bills, taking meetings, doing challenges on the site, it's all good in this neighborhood.

Why do you come to work in the morning?

I believe we are building the best team in Boston. Super hungry, motivated, driven people, who also are super nice and genuine. I love working alongside my best friends, and hearing about their lives, and stories, and girlfriends, and boyfriends, and problems that need fixing, and holidays, and happy days.

What lessons has your work life taught you?

Renaissance men and women exist in this world. And there is no reason you can't be one of them.

What advice would you give someone who is interested in pursuing a similar line of work?

Read the following five books:

  1. 1.  Atlas Shrugged (Ayn Rand)
  2. 2.  How to Win Friends and Influence People (Dale Carnegie)
  3. 3.  The Lean Startup (Eric Reis)
  4. 4.  The Entrepreneur's Guide to Customer Development (Brant Cooper and Pat Vlaskovits)
  5. 5.  Never Eat Alone (Keith Ferrazzi)

Then come find me.

What is the best part of working at CampusLIVE?

Our team is epic. They are the best part of CampusLIVE.

What's the coolest thing you've accomplished thus far working at CampusLIVE?

Building the infrastructure of the company and building a kick ass team with my fellow employees.
